Family Therapy Podcast
Episode 10: The Unexpected Adventures of Erica and Warren
The episode opens with Erica's excitement about watching Marvel's Thunderbolts with her family, quickly transforming into a thoughtful exploration of how superhero stories resonate with real-life emotional challenges. Her connection to Yelena's character—particularly around anxiety and dark moments—reveals the often-overlooked therapeutic value of blockbuster films. Beyond mere entertainment, these stories provide mirrors for our own struggles and reminders that everyone needs support during difficult times.
Just as listeners settle into this pop culture discussion, the conversation shifts to Erica's return to fitness after a four-year hiatus. Her determination to help a colleague on their wellness journey stands in stark contrast to the unexpected whirlwind of family emergencies that dominated her week—from children with broken bones and road rash to a smoking car on the freeway. Warren contributes his own misadventures, including a laugh-out-loud story about climbing into a storm drain to rescue his AirPods while bewildered food delivery customers looked on.
What makes Family Therapy uniquely captivating isn't the individual stories but the cousins' ability to find humor and humanity in life's unpredictability. When Erica describes her precious moments of self-care—"I'm not gonna use no brain cells, I'm just gonna sit here and be mindless"—it resonates with anyone who's ever felt stretched too thin by responsibilities. Similarly, Warren's tale of driving a car with a faulty radiator for years speaks to the universal experience of making do despite imperfect circumstances.
Tune in Thursday for our premium episode on meditation and new age practices, where we'll explore how mindfulness helps us navigate life's challenges. This episode of Family Therapy contains adult themes and strong language, mainly from Erica. Hello Erica.
Speaker 2:Hey Warren, How's it going?
Speaker 1:Good, how are you?
Speaker 2:I'm doing well, thanks.
Speaker 1:Good good.
Speaker 2:What's that?
Speaker 1:intro. No, just it was, I don't know, trying to be fun, I guess yeah, there you go, it's always fun but it's, it's. It's usually me that's the potty mouth, though I feel like you haven't really cursed a whole lot on this episode no or had any adult things to talk about, or foul language or anything.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean I do drop the F-bomb sometimes you have, you have, actually, you have. But I don't really.
Speaker 1:But I'm the one that's talking shit all the time.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's okay, though it's okay.
Speaker 1:We need an applause already. Oh yeah, For sure.
Speaker 2:Somebody needs to talk shit.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah.
Speaker 2:And that's totally me. That's definitely what I'll do, yeah so how was your week?
Speaker 1:Good, how was yours?
Speaker 2:It was busy. I had a lot going on, so yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, anything you want to talk about, anything you want to discuss, anything juicy.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so I did want to mention I did go watch Thunderbolts.
Speaker 1:Oh, did you. Yeah? When, with who?
Speaker 2:A while back, on Mother's Day, we went With who? So that was like a couple weeks ago, with the kids, with my family.
Speaker 1:Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 2:So yeah, so the boys, we went to go watch it and it was really good.
Speaker 1:Did you stay for the end scene?
Speaker 2:Yes, both of them, both of them, both of them. Yeah, have you seen the Fantastic Four trailer yet?
Speaker 1:I don't think so. We're going to watch it today, when we're done here.
Speaker 2:Okay, sounds good you can watch it. But yeah, so now, because I think I mentioned before, my boys are very big Marvel fans and so we were totally excited to go watch it. I really liked Yelena, her characterena her character.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, she's a fan favorite. Yeah, she really is.
Speaker 2:I loved her personality. I feel like I could relate with her in certain ways. You know I'm dealing with anxiety or whatever. You know.
Speaker 1:And and bob or bobby bob, yeah, yeah and yeah Bob.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and that whole scene too, because my mind goes so deep sometimes.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:So, and I can like relate with certain things like how he you know, you go in these dark places and it's hard to come out, yeah, and you start being crazy, mm-hmm, and it's like that one person can come and come for you, which is Elena.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:I don't know if I'm saying her name, right Um, and she kind of like talked to him like we're here, we got you you know and just having that support, I was like damn that's, I need that yeah.
Speaker 1:That movie has like two like meanings. You know, like Bob is going through an actual like void, void like an actual dark being, whatever, and then elena's going through an actual emotional void right and it's, the movie is kind of just showing you both, both ends, you know, like both both aspects, yeah, both aspects.
Speaker 2:It's perfect. Yeah, yeah, and because of that, like I felt like um just with my emotions and and whatnot that I experienced. I'm like dang, I could relate and I just it hit. You know that that those parts hit, so it was, it was really cool and I was like wow, it's pretty good. I didn't think you would yeah awesome, I'm glad but now I want to go on this binge where I want to watch the avengers and then I want to kind of watch the storyline.
Speaker 2:I just don't know where to start yeah is the thing, because I've watched him in the past. My, my favorite is Doctor Strange. Um, because I'm more of it, um, I liked spiritual like type things, and so I, just, like I said, I really enjoyed those movies. So, um, I need to figure out how to start watching them and, like I don't know if it has to be like an order or yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:Well, that's what. That's what I'm here for One of these days. I'm planning to break it down, okay, but I'm just trying to figure out, like the right outline, you know, but it's coming, it's coming, but I'm glad um other than elena and that, what did you else what? What else did you like about it?
Speaker 2:um. The dad is hilarious. I liked how he's just like oh, david harbour's character.
Speaker 1:Yeah, the russian yeah the um, the, what is it? The red guardian?
Speaker 2:yes, he is so funny. Yeah, um, yeah, he's good and yeah david harbour.
Speaker 1:he has a really strong american accent too. He's good at his Russian accent Very good.
Speaker 2:Yeah, very good. Oh, so he's not Russian, no, he's American. Oh wow, he's really good at it, he's good yeah, Yelena and Red Guardian.
Speaker 1:They're from the Black Widow movie.
Speaker 2:Right, because that's the dad and sister, right, yeah, right, because that's the dad and sister, right, yeah, yeah, yeah Of Black Widow, right? Okay?
Speaker 1:I'm not sure if he's the dad I don't remember.
Speaker 2:I think so. I only seen it once.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay, yeah but I think so, something like that. Yeah, because she's like that figure.
Speaker 2:Yeah, because she mentioned in the movie like you left me Like it's been a year, sister, that you know. So I'm assuming that was. But but yeah, other than that, um, yeah, I, I think those two parts that I mentioned as they were going through those um challenges, uh, that stuck out the most to me. And then the dad, of course, he was so funny just trying to build this team, right and then, so they get what he got what they wanted is.
Speaker 2:Did I say that right? Yeah, um, but it was funny because it's like the avengers and bob oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, bob is yeah century.
Speaker 1:It was a good movie. I liked it a lot. I'm glad you saw it. You saw it. I really liked um julia louise dreyfus.
Speaker 2:Or whatever her name is, and I'm horrible with names, so you're going to have to.
Speaker 1:She's the one that played with the shriek in her hair.
Speaker 2:Valentina. Valentina Allegra DeFontaine. Yes, Okay, yeah, she's really good too.
Speaker 1:Valentina Allegra DeFontaine. She made several cameos already in the MCU. She made a cameo in Black Panther 2, Wakanda Forever. Have you seen this second one?
Speaker 2:Yeah, because those are some really good ones. It's been a couple years because I watched them when they came out on theater. Yeah, I know Michonne played in Black Panther, michonne from the Walking Dead. I don't know her real name, so that's her character.
Speaker 1:I love Black Panther dude. Yes, me too. I don't know her real name, so that's her character. I love Black Panther dude. Yes, me too. I don't know who you're talking about. I don't know her name, but I know her character.
Speaker 2:She's such a badass. I love her in the. Walking Dead and in that movie it was awesome. She's awesome. I love her character.
Speaker 1:I love Black Panther, so fucking much yeah, what else?
Speaker 2:I got back into the gym oh yeah so I've been going, yeah, with my, my colleague. So they do like a health challenge every time around, every year around this time I work at work. Yeah, we did not join just because I'm don't want to make friends. I have one and that's good enough yeah um.
Speaker 2:So she was like, hey, you know, I want to start this health journey. And I was like, hey, I've been wanting to go back to the gym, so perfect timing. So I've been trying to. I've been training her. Um, she's never worked out, she's never been on a meal plan, nothing like that.
Speaker 1:So, she, she's doing pretty well oh cool, so you've met her at the gym um no, I work with her oh, you work with her um, but she was talking about she wanted to start her health journey. Oh.
Speaker 2:And so I told her you know, I used to do this previously, so she trusted me to be her wellness coach. So that's kind of what we're doing, right now.
Speaker 1:Okay, so it's like remote, like you're not going to meet her. Yeah, we do. We go to the gym.
Speaker 2:Like we've been going every day. Oh, okay, sorry, I lost you. No, okay, okay, okay, okay, cool. So you met her at the gym already. Yeah, so we work together and then we get off and then you go change your workout together.
Speaker 1:Okay cool, okay cool. That's what I meant like you met her like you met her at the gym, and you guys worked out okay anyway yeah, no, I thought you meant like I met her at the gym and then yeah no, I'm, yeah, I met her at work, I guess. Okay, and then yeah, that's fine, okay, cool, that's all, that's cool. So how's that going so far?
Speaker 2:It's going pretty good. Um, yeah, so, being that I used to work out and really, you know, kind of like a gym rat, I guess, um, it's been a while. It's been actually four years since I've been consistent, ever since I moved to Arizona. Um, and I think we've mentioned that before, yeah, it's, it's been consistent for now. I think the first two weeks is like very hard to get through, but we're we're pushing through. She hasn't given up. I had a lot of events take place last week. You know, my boys, teenage boys oh my gosh, the friend got in a in an accident on the bike um pretty much broke his collarbone.
Speaker 2:And then my youngest wrecked his bike has a bunch of road rash freaking broke his thumb. And then my other boy he was driving to go get um a mouthpiece. And it's hot it's already getting hot here oh yeah um, so his experimental car, because he has a couple cars, but his uh cruiser car, whatever you want to call it, um overheated and started smoking on the freeway.
Speaker 2:Thank, god he was able to pull off on the side. He called me, somebody stopped to help him, so that was really nice of them, and so that happened. I'm trying to work, I'm trying to go to the gym.
Speaker 1:Trying to do all that.
Speaker 2:Yeah, trying to do all that, and then we still have our podcast.
Speaker 1:Podcast to do.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's been crazy. So last night was actually really nice because, um, I didn't have much going on, nobody was home so I just like took a shower and I just relaxed.
Speaker 1:I was like I'm not gonna do anything.
Speaker 2:I'm not gonna use no brain cells, I'm just gonna sit here and be mindless.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you gotta take time to just like. Let erica just recover.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Recover and just yeah, you can't be stretched too thin. Yeah, you know, because eventually you know it's exhausting. It's exhausting, yeah, it's exhausting.
Speaker 2:So, but I'm feeling good and refreshed today so we're good Anything happen with you?
Speaker 1:I mean no, when I'm driving. I have the habit of putting things when I'm using it, like my vape, like right here, like in my crotch in my crotch, or like my phone, like I'll be on my phone and I'll just like put it down and then just drive, or like my coke or my drink or whatever you know. But my airpods I put them in and then I put the case down, I dropped it down on my lap and then I got out of the. I got to the house, but out of the car and I this is how I lost my first pair I um got out and they fell out of the car and I fell into a drain oh yeah, it was so bad.
Speaker 2:I was so. I would have been so sad.
Speaker 1:I was sad for a bit yeah my mind was like gone through like five scenarios real quick, like Like what am I going to do?
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:But I was delivering food, so I and the drain is right in front of the house so I know they saw me.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:I delivered their food and I parked there. I was staying there looking. I could see it in the drain. It's about like five feet down, so I tried to fish it out with a stick. I couldn't do it, it was impossible, dang it. I was in my tropos so I couldn't climb in there. Yeah, but I eventually had to. I pulled it out and that thing was heavy.
Speaker 2:That grill thing. Yeah, oh yeah, that was heavy, heavy.
Speaker 1:I twisted my finger trying to get that thing out.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it was stupid but anyway, I climbed in. I don't know it's stupid. Oh, so you did get it, yeah, yeah I climbed in and I fished it out okay it was a little bit.
Speaker 1:It was a little bit, but uh, it took me about a good seven minutes and then climbed back out again it took me about a good seven minutes were they watching you the whole time? They were because they didn't get their food.
Speaker 2:Wow yeah.
Speaker 1:And I hit the doorbell and of course they got the notification that their food is there.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And they didn't get their food until.
Speaker 2:I left. Yeah, they're probably like what the hell is this guy doing? Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1:That's what I thought too.
Speaker 2:Like what you okay, you know that's what sucks. People suck these days. I feel like Right. Because it's like they could have gave you something.
Speaker 1:some tongs it looked like there was a stick in there that I was using, Like it was already in there, Like somebody had already dropped something in there and tried to fish it out, I see. So there was like some tools there already a long stick and a long pole. Oh wow. So I tried, but you know, the case is so rounded and small like it's impossible to just fish it out you know?
Speaker 1:Yeah, oh my God. So climbing in there was just the inevitable thing. I didn't want to do that because I had no shoes on and it was a small little area and still, even even when I was in there, it was so small to where I had to like bend my knee, like I couldn't just bend down.
Speaker 1:Yeah, because you're tall, I had to get in there and squat down oh my god and I was thinking like if I squat down too much, my legs gonna get stuck oh my god, and I'd be like stuck down there oh my god that would be, even that would be my life. That would be. That was probably in the plan.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:That was probably on the agenda.
Speaker 2:Yeah Well, good thing it didn't happen.
Speaker 1:Good thing it didn't happen I stopped it because that was what was going to happen.
Speaker 2:Yeah, well, that's good.
Speaker 1:But I think that's the only thing that's happened to me really. Oh, okay, Just a busy week.
Speaker 2:Yeah, just a busy week yeah. Busy week. It's like never ending. I feel like Never a dull moment in my life for sure let's go back.
Speaker 1:I want to circle back to your son's car overheating, uh-huh why.
Speaker 2:Do you know why it did that? Or well, um, what I'm thinking happened is earlier in the day he went to go wash it, and so it's a, it's an older car, um, so he went to go wash it and I think that, you know, with the pressure of the wash, I think it just like undid like a hose underneath or something, and so when he was driving all the antifreeze, like I think that hose just got loose and it was like leaking. So when he went to go get off the off-ramp, it just like started pouring out.
Speaker 2:Oh no, so then that's what caused it to overheat so the coolant leaked out from the bottom yeah so I'm assuming what happened was when he washed his car, the hose got loose and so he was driving around and then, um, I don't know if it was leaking like since then or what, but thank goodness he was able to get off the highway. On the on-ramp he was blocking traffic because it was hard for me to get to him, but by the time I got to him all the antifreeze was out and he thought that it was the motor, because he was like the car, just like. I don't know what he said, it did, it did something. It just started smoking. So he opened the hood and he was like dang it, like he thought it was the oil leaking because it was just like poured, like gushed out, like the whole road was wet with the antifreeze, whatever oh no um, so thank goodness it wasn't oil.
Speaker 2:And then it smelled like gas and I was like well, is there like a gas leak? I'm like freaking out because I'm like, get away from the car, we're gonna blow up, you know like all these, oh my gosh, all these bad yeah, exactly, and he's like mom, calm down. You know, like, no, like, um, I don't think it's a gas, I think it's oil. I might have blew the engine and then, um, when we got there, it was just the antifreeze. What?
Speaker 2:is what we were told. So I was like, thank god, you know what. We were in the middle of watching the game and so, um, and then I was like why do you have to be so far away? Like well, he was like 15 minutes away. I'm freaking out because he's like I'm blocking traffic, people are honking at me and I'm like freaking douchebags, like nobody can get out and help, like you're a kid, you know and I don't know. People just suck. But other than that.
Speaker 2:So we got there um, there was this guy there with him. Thank goodness, one person at least helped. Um, they pushed the car to the side and then we just had it towed back home. And it was so funny because the tow truck driver was like man, I haven't seen one of these cars. This is such a cool car and you're so lucky.
Speaker 1:And I was like, oh my gosh, oh my god, just get it home. Yeah, I was like just get it home, yeah oh yeah, that's I wouldn't. I would be like just get it home, I don't care, just get it home yeah, he was all pumped so but um yeah, so we it home.
Speaker 2:Now it's just a matter of getting that hose fixed and putting some antifreeze back in it.
Speaker 1:Oh man and just go from there.
Speaker 2:But yeah, like I said, it's never a dull moment with these kids. I'm just thankful that you know it's their bikes and their toys and their car. Thank God they didn't get in no crazy major accidents, but they're just teenage boys being boys. They're not out trying to party and do this and that and sneaking out, they're just living their best life which is what I'm grateful for. But it's so like it gives me anxiety because I'm like when my phone rings.
Speaker 1:Yeah, like I said, this generation is something else. They have all that plus all the social media that's like in their program, in their brain, or the internet stuff. It's just like no, these little angels aren't exactly little angels.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's a lot.
Speaker 1:I used to my previous car, my other Kia. There was something wrong with the um, what is it? The radiator that keeps it cool? Uh-huh, like for years and years, I would, just I was so lazy to not get it fixed, I would just drive it like that. So I'd always have to like, even doing door dash and living here in phoenix, um, I would, my car's radiator would just it would leak the coolant and I just I forgot why. There was a reason why I just couldn't get it fixed, but I think it was just money, but I would have to rely on always coasting to keep the car cool.
Speaker 1:If I was at a stoplight or at a train, I would have to turn my car off so it wouldn't overheat. Wow, because if I sit there at a stoplight for more than like three minutes, it'll start getting hot on on the dashboard like that little thermometer thing and there are some close calls where I'm sitting there at like a, at a stoplight or something, and the car is like overheating and like nobody's moving and like what the fuck?
Speaker 1:this car's gonna start smoking in like two seconds yeah there was a time when you know, like driving from new mexico to here was very swift because I was just you know, you're just coasting all the way, so my car would stay cool all the way, right, um, but then when I would come to like a, like a halt, like an accident, and the whole freeways backed up, oh man, and it's like 120 outside.
Speaker 1:I'm like I was like my heart was like panicking, like my car's gonna overheat in like two minutes if I don't, like I've had it on the on the aches for like so long like, like, minutes, minutes like, like. Oh my god oh, that's scary, scared, you know, like oh never did, though it never overheated it never and it still runs perfectly fine oh good. I got it fixed eventually, but there was a time with at least one or two years.
Speaker 1:I would like that was my life yeah I've wherever I had to go I had to make sure I had to make sure I was coasting. I can't hit traffic, I can't be at a stoplight, I can't stop anywhere I didn't give, I mean did that trigger. It was stressed all kind oh my gosh, all kinds, all kinds.
Speaker 2:I could have been, oh hell no, I would have just stayed home, I wouldn't have done nothing, because I would have been just overstimulated. I couldn't. I know because you have to work.
Speaker 1:That was not an option.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Not an option Well that's good. So I finally paid up. I actually didn't pay, I actually took it in and got the whole radiator replaced. It cost at least I. It was a good. It was a good amount. It was a. It was a couple thousand a couple thousand.
Speaker 2:Oh man.
Speaker 1:I didn't have it in my account.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:I didn't have. I didn't have at least half of it.
Speaker 2:Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 1:And um, it was a big amount.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And the guy wanted me to go for it and I was using a rental to work. So I was like, okay, cool, I'll have that full amount in a couple days, just give me some time to dash. And he's like, no, it needs to be off my lot now Today. Today I said I didn't say this, but the guy had a big old fucking parking lot, big old lot, and my car is this tiny.
Speaker 2:Right.
Speaker 1:And it's in the way.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Of what? For two days you have this big old fucking lot.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:You're making shit up and I'm paying you this big sum. At least keep my car in your lot for two days.
Speaker 2:Yeah, if I'm paying you this big fucking number.
Speaker 1:It's not a courtesy to just you know. Exactly, leave my car there for a couple days, but no. So I was like, okay, well, I guess I'll go for it. Yeah, I told myself too, I guess I'll go for it. I have no money in my account, but I'll just go run my card yeah and it took it oh, thank god so I was like okay, cool, I got my car and all my accounts were gathered, yeah. So I was like fuck, but whatever, at least you got it and yeah yeah people like that just I.
Speaker 2:I feel like people that can be considerate or understanding just karma's going to bite you in the ass because people just suck. And I'm going to say this multiple times.
Speaker 1:People do suck. Yeah, they do, they really do I mean they, they, I don't know it.
Speaker 2:Just it's crazy how our world is. Nobody wants to help, or it's like it's an inconvenience to park a car for two extra days. But yeah you want to take thousands of dollars you know that probably didn't even take, yeah it was dumb.
Speaker 1:I knew it was a douchebag from the sound of his voice and I knew when I got there, because it was like half a mile away, it was just just like a walk away. So I was like, okay, I'll be right there. I guess I'll be right there. I was unhappy, of course.
Speaker 2:Right.
Speaker 1:And he could tell. But when I got there he wasn't there. Of course he wasn't there. Who was there? His daughter.
Speaker 2:Oh my gosh. I was like what a fucking pussy. Yeah, exactly Was it. It wasn't a big like company, Was it just like a mom and pop type?
Speaker 1:shop. No, it was, it was, it was a, but still it's a well-known like a community place where people take their cars.
Speaker 2:Well established.
Speaker 1:Well established in Phoenix, arizona. Yeah, oh, my gosh Stupid dude. But, whatever that was years ago.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:But um, yeah, Thank goodness, that's over with. But yeah, he just goes back and forth so I think that's about it, warren.
Speaker 2:We today. We had a fun conversation.
Speaker 1:I think you know it was good. It was a good episode. We talked about thunderbolts, we talked about my airpods, we talked about our cars overheating. We talked about a lot this week or this episode, so it was good, yeah, it was really full episode.
Speaker 2:Yeah, full of busyness and randomness and just, uh, yeah, just getting through.
Speaker 1:So all this family therapy, yes um.
Speaker 2:So, on our deep dive, we're gonna talk this thursday yep this thursday. Thank you for that. Um, we are gonna go into talking about meditation and new age practices.
Speaker 1:That's a good topic. Yeah, what it means to us. What it means to us, how we started. Just some stories about meditation and a little bit about some new age practices yeah, so it's going to be fun.
Speaker 2:I mean we will provide some good information. I've experienced well.
Speaker 1:I will talk about my experiences with it, let's say the juice for the episode.
Speaker 2:I know, I'm so excited. I'm like can we do it now?
